SOURCES ABOUT NORTH KOREA (II)

SOCIETY

Los crímenes contra la humanidad de Corea del Norte según la ONU (2014). Redacción BBC Mundo.
This article talks about the social situation in North Korea, more concretely about the problems that society has been recently been through, such as torture or extreme violence due to political disagreements. The UN has decided to intervene in order to end up this conflict as soon as possible.

Salmon, Andrew. (2010). What is life like inside North Korea? For CNN. October 10, 2010.
In this article published by the CNN, the author analyzes briefly how the society in this country has evolved during the last decades, as well as some points of its policy and economy that affect society too. Some interesting information about Human Rights is also given.

Dong Yong Sueng. (2010). North Korea's Declining Life Expectancy. SERI Quarterly. Apr2010, Vol. 3 Issue 2, p110-114. 5p.
The article focuses on the impact of aging population. It notes that the country's population has declined as a result of the mass starvation occurrence in the late 1990s due to natural disasters. It mentions that the two reasons for the negative census result is the fact that North Korea is being pushed into an aging society status and that the country indicates a lack of future manpower.

LANGUAGE ISSUES

Choe Sang-Hum (2006). Koreas: Divided by a common language - Asia - Pacific - International Herald Tribune.  http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/30/world/asia/30iht-dialect.2644361.html?_r=1&

Lee, Hyun-Bok. (1990) Differences in language use between North and South KoreaInternational Journal of the Sociology of Language. 1990, Vol. 1990 Issue 82, p71. 16p.

Both documents talk about how the division of Korea affected the language of the country; some decades after the division, the geographical separation of Korea started to be also a "linguistic separation". North and South Korea used to share a common language, but nowadays many things of that language have evolved differently in each country.

  1. Blog design is functional, but rather boring.
Ensure font and text size consistency
SOCIETY: good selection, but BBC article should be in English. Also, include URL
LANGUAGE: no comment on first article
DOMESTIC POLITICS: good selection, including FA article
Really good selection generally - missing monographs and grey literature
    8/10
